The department of the Vaucluse is situated between the two great valleys of the Rhône and the Durance and the first foothills of the Alps. Here warm hillsides covered with olive trees, lavender, cypress, cedars and pines jostle for space with the noble vines. Together with an exotic variety of herbs the countryside is lent a magical scent while the Roman-tiled roofs of the villages give off a rosy tinge. During the heat of the day you can find many small squares, shaded by plane trees where there is the inevitable café with tables outside.
